AC WiFi Buying Guide
Wireless internet has become a necessity in our lives today, and the better the speed and connectivity, the better the experience. AC WiFi (802.11ac), the fifth generation of wireless networking technology, offers faster connectivity speeds and more comprehensive coverage than the previous generation. But with so many different types and brands of AC WiFi routers on the market, it can be challenging to decide which one to buy.
This AC WiFi buying guide will help you understand what you should look for when buying an AC WiFi router, from the speed of the router to the number of antennas and other vital features.
The Speed of the Router
The speed of the router is the most significant factor when it comes to purchasing an AC WiFi router. It is essential to know the bandwidth your internet service provider (ISP) offers to ensure that you get the maximum speed from the router. Generally, the speed of the router is measured in “Mbps” (megabits per second) or “Gbps” (gigabits per second).
It is essential to check for the bandwidth supported by the router. AC WiFi routers can support up to 3 Gbps of bandwidth, but you might not require so much, based on your internet usage.
Number of Antennas
The number of antennas on an AC WiFi router is crucial because it determines the coverage of the router. The more the antennas, the better the coverage. AC WiFi routers come in different configurations that range from 1x1 to 4x4. The higher the number of antennas, the higher the speed and coverage of the router.
For example, a 1x1 AC WiFi router has one transmitting antenna and one receiving antenna, whereas a 2x2 router has two of each, and a 3x3 router has three of each. A 4x4 router, on the other hand, has four transmitting antennas and four receiving antennas. The 4x4 configuration provides the best coverage and speed of all the AC WiFi routers.
Compatibility with Devices
When buying an AC WiFi router, it is essential to ensure its compatibility with your devices. Not all devices are compatible with the latest technology, so you should check whether your devices support AC WiFi. If they don't, the router's advanced features will not be of use, and you may never experience faster speeds or better coverage.
AC WiFi is backward compatible with older devices, so if your device supports the older technology 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, or 802.11n, it will work with an AC WiFi router, but only at the older technology's speed.
Bandwidth and Frequency
AC WiFi routers have two bands that work simultaneously, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band has a longer range and better penetration than the 5 GHz band. It is suitable for general internet usage, such as browsing and streaming, and also supports legacy devices. The 5 GHz band, on the other hand, delivers faster speeds, but its coverage is not as broad as the 2.4 GHz band.
The bandwidth of the router also affects the speed and connectivity of the devices connected to it. Most AC WiFi routers support bandwidths of either 20 MHz or 40 MHz. Routers with 40 MHz bandwidth allow for faster speeds, but they may interfere with nearby WiFi networks.
MU-MIMO Technology
Multi-User Multiple Input Multiple Output (MU-MIMO) technology is a feature that allows multiple devices to use the same router at the same time. Before MU-MIMO, routers could only transmit data to one device at a time, creating a bottleneck when many devices were connected to the router.
MU-MIMO technology enables routers to send data to multiple devices simultaneously, improving the speed and performance of all devices connected to the router at the same time. Some AC WiFi routers support MU-MIMO technology, so it is essential to check whether the router you're buying supports it if you need to connect multiple devices to the internet at the same time.
Gigabit Ethernet Ports
Gigabit Ethernet ports provide fast connectivity to devices connected directly to the router. These ports are suitable for devices that require a stable and consistent connection, such as desktops, gaming consoles, and smart TVs.
When buying an AC WiFi router, it is essential to check the number of Gigabit Ethernet ports it has. The more the ports, the more devices can be connected to the router at the same time. Most AC WiFi routers come with four Gigabit Ethernet ports, which is often enough for most households.
QoS (Quality of Service)
Quality of Service (QoS) is an essential feature of an AC WiFi router that allows you to prioritize internet traffic based on the devices connected to it. QoS ensures that bandwidth is distributed fairly among all connected devices and ensures that more bandwidth is allocated to devices that require it, such as gaming consoles and smart TVs.
QoS is a useful feature in households where multiple devices are connected to the internet at the same time. It allows for a smoother internet experience, especially when streaming videos, gaming, or using video conferencing tools.
Guest Networks
A guest network is a separate network created by the router that allows guests to connect to the internet without accessing the primary network. Guest networks are a useful feature for households that have many guests or for small businesses that require a separate network to protect sensitive data.
The guest network is usually secured by a separate password, and the devices connected to it have restricted access to the primary network. Guest networks are also an essential feature for households that have children, as they allow parents to restrict access to certain sites.
Price
AC WiFi routers come at different prices, depending on their features and brand. It is essential to consider your budget before purchasing an AC WiFi router. It is also necessary to compare prices from different vendors to ensure you get the best deal.
However, keep in mind that a more expensive router may not necessarily offer better features than a cheaper one. It is essential to consider the features you need when purchasing a router to ensure that you get value for your money.
Conclusion
AC WiFi technology has taken wireless internet to the next level, offering faster speeds and better coverage than ever before. When buying an AC WiFi router, it is essential to consider the router's speed, the number of antennas, its compatibility with your devices, the bandwidth and frequency it supports, MU-MIMO technology, Gigabit Ethernet ports, QoS, guest networks, and price.
By considering these factors, you can make an informed decision when purchasing an AC WiFi router that satisfies your requirements and offers excellent value for money.
