If you're in the market for a mechanical keyboard, then you've probably heard of Cherry MX switches. These are the most popular switches among mechanical keyboard enthusiasts, and for good reason - they're durable, reliable, and offer a satisfying typing experience. However, there are several different types of Cherry MX switches to choose from, so it can be tricky to decide which one is right for you. In this guide, we'll take a closer look at the different Cherry MX switches and their characteristics so you can make an informed decision.
What Are Cherry MX Switches?
Cherry MX switches are the gold standard for mechanical switches. They're popular among gamers, typists, and anyone who wants a high-quality keyboard with a tactile typing experience. Cherry MX switches are made by Cherry GmbH, a German company that's been producing mechanical switches since the 1980s.
The Cherry MX switch family includes several different switches, each with its own unique characteristics. These switches are differentiated by color, with each color representing a different type of switch. Let's take a closer look at the different switches in the Cherry MX lineup.
Cherry MX Red
Cherry MX Red switches are the most popular switches for gaming keyboards. They're relatively light, with an actuation force of just 45 grams. This makes them easy to press quickly, which is ideal for fast-paced games that require rapid button presses. Cherry MX Red switches are also relatively quiet, so they won't disturb others around you while you're gaming.
The one downside to Cherry MX Red switches is that they don't offer much tactile feedback. They're linear switches, which means there's no bump or click when you press the key. Some gamers prefer this, as it allows for faster double-tapping and smoother keystrokes. However, if you're used to a more tactile typing experience, Cherry MX Red switches may not be the best choice for you.
Cherry MX Brown
Cherry MX Brown switches are a good compromise between gaming and typing. They're tactile switches, which means you'll feel a slight bump when you press the key, but they're not as loud as Cherry MX Blue switches. Cherry MX Brown switches have an actuation force of 45 grams, so they're relatively light and easy to press.
Cherry MX Brown switches are a good choice if you use your keyboard for both gaming and typing. They offer enough tactile feedback to make typing comfortable, but they're also light enough to use for gaming. They're also relatively quiet, so you won't wake up your roommates while you're typing away late at night.
Cherry MX Blue
If you want a tactile typing experience, then Cherry MX Blue switches are for you. These switches have an actuation force of 50 grams, and they offer both a tactile bump and an audible click when you press the key. This makes them ideal for touch typists who want to feel every keystroke.
Cherry MX Blue switches are also relatively loud, which can be a drawback if you work in a quiet office or share a dorm room with a roommate. However, if you're a touch typist who values the tactile typing experience, then Cherry MX Blue switches are an excellent choice.
Cherry MX Black
Cherry MX Black switches are the heaviest switches in the Cherry MX lineup, with an actuation force of 60 grams. This makes them difficult to press quickly, which is less than ideal for gaming. However, if you're a touch typist who prefers a heavy typing experience, then Cherry MX Black switches might be right for you.
Cherry MX Black switches are also linear switches, which means they don't offer much tactile feedback. This can make them less comfortable to type on for extended periods of time. If you're looking for a typing switch, we recommend trying Cherry MX Brown or Cherry MX Blue switches instead.
Cherry MX Clear
Cherry MX Clear switches are similar to Cherry MX Brown switches, but they have a slightly heavier actuation force of 65 grams. This makes them more difficult to press, but it also means you're less likely to make a typing mistake by accidentally hitting a key. Cherry MX Clear switches are tactile switches, so you'll feel a bump when you press the key.
Cherry MX Clear switches are a good choice if you want a tactile typing experience but find Cherry MX Brown switches too light. They're also relatively quiet, so you won't disturb others around you while you're typing.
Cherry MX Silent
Cherry MX Silent switches are a new addition to the Cherry MX lineup. These switches are similar to Cherry MX Red switches, but they're much quieter. They use a patented noise reduction technology that significantly reduces the noise produced when you press the key.
Cherry MX Silent switches are a good choice if you want a lightweight gaming switch that won't disturb others around you. They're also a good option if you work in a quiet environment and need a quiet typing switch.
Conclusion
Choosing the right Cherry MX switch can make a big difference in your typing or gaming experience. We hope this guide has helped you understand the differences between the different Cherry MX switches and which one might be right for you. As always, the best way to know which switch is right for you is to try them out yourself. Happy typing!
