Beginners Electric Guitars Buying Guide
Buying your first electric guitar can be both exciting and overwhelming. With so many options available in the market, it can be challenging to know where to start. This guide will help you navigate the different factors you need to consider so you can make an informed decision.
Choose Your Style
The first thing you need to decide is what type of music you want to play. Different guitar styles are suited to different genres of music. For example, if you are into heavy metal or hard rock, you might want to opt for a guitar with humbucker pickups as they are designed to produce a high-output, aggressive sound.
On the other hand, if you are into blues, jazz, or country music, a single-coil pickup will give you a bright, twangy sound that's well suited to those genres.
Consider Your Budget
Electric guitars can cost anything from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. Before deciding on a guitar, you'll need to consider your budget. It's always a good idea to go for the best quality guitar you can afford. Remember, you get what you pay for in terms of quality, materials, and sound.
If you are new to playing and want to keep your costs low, there are some excellent starter guitars out there that are well crafted and provide quality sound.
Body Type and Construction
Electric guitars come in different shapes, sizes, and construction designs. The most common body types include solid-body, hollow-body, and semi-hollow body electric guitars. Solid-body electric guitars are the most popular and versatile choice for beginners. They are built with a solid chunk of wood and are excellent for producing high volumes with minimal feedback.
On the other hand, hollow body electric guitars have a large body and are made up of a thin wooden top and back with a hollow cavity in the middle. They produce a warm, resonant sound and are well suited to genres like jazz and blues.
Semi-hollow body guitars have a solid center block that runs the length of the body, providing added sustain and resistance to feedback. They are a popular option for those who want a balance between the warmth of a hollow body and the punch of a solid body guitar.
Pickups
Pickups are responsible for turning the sound of the strings into an electronic signal that can be amplified. There are two main types of pickups: single-coil and humbucker.
Single-coil pickups produce a bright, clear sound that's well suited for genres like blues, jazz, and country music. They have a shorter magnet and produce a lower output sound. Humbuckers, on the other hand, are designed to produce a higher output with a more aggressive sound. They are well suited to genres like hard rock and heavy metal.
Neck and Fretboard
The neck of an electric guitar should be comfortable to play and easy to move around. Different neck shapes work better for some players than others, so it's essential to try out different necks to find the one that feels most comfortable for you.
The fretboard should also be considered when choosing a guitar. Different woods are used to make the fretboard, and they can affect the sound and feel of the guitar. Maple and rosewood are the two most common types of fretboard woods. Rosewood produces a warm, mellow sound, while maple provides a bright, snappy sound.
Bridge and Tuners
The bridge and tuners are essential components of the electric guitar. The bridge is where the strings are anchored to the body of the guitar, and it plays a crucial role in determining the sound and intonation of the guitar.
There are two main bridge types: the fixed bridge and the tremolo bridge. A fixed bridge has no moving parts and is simpler to use than a tremolo bridge. Tremolo bridges allow you to make whammy bar-like sounds, but they can be difficult to tune and maintain.
Tuners are used to adjust the string's pitch, and they are essential for keeping the guitar in tune. Most beginner electric guitars have basic tuners, but higher-end models come with more advanced tuning systems.
Conclusion
Choosing the right electric guitar can be a daunting task, but with the information provided in this guide, you should feel more confident in making an informed decision. Remember to take your time and try out different models to find the one that's perfect for you. Keep in mind your budget, the style of music you want to play, and the type of sound you want to produce. With these factors in mind, you will be well on your way to finding the perfect electric guitar for your needs.
