Emergency Kit Buying Guide
Emergencies can happen at any time and often without warning. Whether it's a natural disaster, a car breakdown or a medical emergency, being prepared can make all the difference. This is why it's important to have an emergency kit ready to go at all times.
But with so many different types of emergency kits available, it can be hard to know which one is right for you. In this guide, we'll take a look at some of the key factors to consider when buying an emergency kit.
What is an emergency kit?
An emergency kit is essentially a collection of items designed to help you survive in a crisis situation. It can include things like food, water, medical supplies, and tools to help you navigate and communicate in an emergency.
Not all emergencies are created equal, so the contents of your emergency kit may vary depending on your specific needs. For example, if you live in a flood-prone area, you may need to include items like sandbags and water pumps, whereas if you live in an earthquake-prone area, you may need to include things like gloves, hard hats and dust masks.
What to consider when buying an emergency kit
Duration of emergency
The first thing to consider when buying an emergency kit is the expected duration of the emergency. A short-term emergency (e.g. a power outage or a snowstorm) may only require a basic kit with enough supplies to last for a day or two. A longer-term emergency (e.g. a natural disaster) may require a more comprehensive kit with supplies to last for several weeks.
Location
Your location is another important consideration when buying an emergency kit. Different regions face different types of emergencies, which means your kit should be tailored to your specific location. For example, if you live in an area prone to hurricanes or flooding, you may need to include a waterproof container or bag to protect your supplies. If you live in a remote area, you may need to include items like a map, compass, or portable radio to help you navigate and communicate.
Number of people
The number of people in your household should also be taken into account when buying an emergency kit. A kit designed for a family of four will need to have more food, water, and supplies than a kit designed for an individual. Some emergency kits come in different sizes to accommodate different household sizes.
Type of emergency
The type of emergency you are most likely to face should also be considered when buying an emergency kit. For example, if you live in an area prone to earthquakes, your kit should include items like gloves, hard hats, and dust masks. If you live in a remote area, your kit should include navigation and communication tools like a map, compass, and portable radio.
What should be included in an emergency kit?
While the exact content of an emergency kit will vary depending on individual preferences and circumstances, there are some key items that should be included in any emergency kit. These include:
- Water - At least one gallon of water per person per day for drinking and sanitation purposes.
- Food - Non-perishable and easy-to-prepare food items like canned goods, energy bars, and dried fruit.
- First aid kit - Including items like bandages, antiseptic, gauze, and pain relievers.
- Flashlights and batteries - Or other lighting sources like candles or lanterns.
- Radio - Either a battery-operated or hand-cranked radio to receive updates and information.
- Blankets - To keep warm in case of cold temperatures.
- Clothing - Including extra layers and sturdy shoes in case of exposure to the elements.
- Personal hygiene items - Including toilet paper, toothbrushes, and soap.
- Tools - Including a knife, pliers, and a wrench.
- Cash - Including small bills and change in case of power outages affecting electronic payment systems.
Where to buy an emergency kit
There are many places where you can buy an emergency kit, including online retailers, local hardware stores, and outdoor recreation stores. Department stores like Walmart and Target also carry emergency kits, as do national disaster relief organizations like the Red Cross.
When shopping for an emergency kit, be sure to read reviews and check out the credentials of the seller to ensure you are getting a quality product. Look for kits that contain all the essential items and are designed for your specific location and expected duration of the emergency.
If you prefer to assemble your own kit, many of the items listed above can be purchased individually at stores like Walmart, Amazon, and sporting goods stores.
Conclusion
An emergency kit is an essential part of any household, providing necessary supplies to help you survive a crisis situation. When shopping for an emergency kit, it's important to consider your location, expected duration of emergency, the types of emergencies you are most likely to face, and the number of people in your household. There are many places to buy emergency kits, from online retailers to disaster relief organizations, and kits can also be assembled at home by purchasing individual items.
By being prepared, you can increase your chances of staying safe and comfortable during an emergency.
