Fire Engine Buying Guide
A fire engine is a crucial piece of equipment for any fire department. It's important to carefully consider your needs and requirements before buying a fire engine. In this guide, we'll explore some of the key factors to keep in mind when selecting a fire engine.
Determine Your Needs
The first step in buying a fire engine is to determine your needs. Consider the size of your jurisdiction, the types of fires you're likely to encounter, the terrain, and any other factors that may impact your fire department's needs. Here are some questions to ask yourself:
- What is the size of my jurisdiction?
- What types of fires are most common in my area?
- What is the terrain like (e.g. urban, rural, mountainous, etc.)?
- What is the average response time for my department?
- What is my department's budget?
Choose Your Type
There are several types of fire engines available, each designed for different purposes. Here are some of the most common types:
- Pumper: The most common type of fire engine, equipped with a pump and a water tank. Used for fighting fires and pumping water.
- Aerial: Equipped with a ladder and platform for rescue and firefighting. Can also be used to provide lighting and ventilation.
- Tanker: Used to transport large amounts of water to remote areas where there may be no hydrants. Typically used in rural areas.
- Rescue: Equipped with specialized equipment for extricating people from wreckage, such as the jaws of life.
Consider Your Chassis
The chassis is the foundation of the fire engine, and it's important to select the right one for your needs. The most common types of chassis are:
- Commercial: These are manufactured by companies such as Freightliner, International, and Kenworth. They are typically less expensive than custom-made chassis.
- Custom: These are made to order and can be tailored to your exact requirements. They are typically more expensive than commercial chassis.
- Medium-duty: These are designed for smaller fire departments or departments that need a more agile vehicle.
- Heavy-duty: These are designed for larger fire departments or departments that need a more powerful vehicle.
Check Your Water Tank
The water tank is one of the most important components of a fire engine. It's important to select the right size and type of water tank for your needs. Here are some factors to consider:
- Capacity: The size of the water tank will depend on the size of your jurisdiction and the types of fires you're likely to encounter. Tanks can range from 250 gallons to over 3,000 gallons.
- Material: Water tanks are typically made of fiberglass, polypropylene, or stainless steel. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages.
- Baffles: Baffles are partitions inside the water tank that help to prevent sloshing and increase stability while driving.
Choose Your Pump
The pump is responsible for delivering water to your firefighters, and it's important to choose the right one for your needs. Here are some factors to consider:
- Capacity: The capacity of the pump will depend on the size of your jurisdiction and the types of fires you're likely to encounter. Pumps can range from 500 to over 2,000 gallons per minute.
- Pressure: The pressure of the pump will depend on the distance you need to deliver water and the height you need to reach. Pumps can range from 150 to over 200 pounds per square inch (psi).
- Type: There are two main types of pumps: centrifugal and positive displacement.
- Drive: Pumps can be driven by the engine or by a separate engine.
- Transmission: Pumps can have either manual or automatic transmissions.
Review Your Hose Storage
Hose storage is important for quick access to water supply. Here are some factors to consider:
- Type: Hose storage can be either side-mounted or rear-mounted.
- Capacity: The capacity of hose storage will depend on the size of your jurisdiction and the types of fires you're likely to encounter.
- Retrieval: Hose retrieval can be either manual or automatic.
Check for Safety Features
Safety features are crucial for protecting your firefighters and the public. Here are some features to look for:
- Seatbelts: All seats should be equipped with seatbelts.
- Airbags: Airbags can provide additional protection in the event of a collision.
- Emergency lighting: Emergency lighting is important for visibility and safety while responding to emergencies.
- Backup cameras: Backup cameras can help to prevent accidents while backing up.
- Stabilization systems: Stabilization systems can help to prevent rollovers and improve stability while driving.
- Exterior lighting: Exterior lighting is important for visibility and safety while working at night.
Consider Maintenance and Repair
Maintenance and repair are important for keeping your fire engine in good working condition. Here are some factors to consider:
- Warranty: A warranty can provide additional peace of mind and protection against defects.
- Service: Make sure you have access to qualified service technicians who can handle maintenance and repairs.
- Parts: Make sure parts are readily available and can be easily replaced when needed.
Conclusion
A fire engine is a major investment for any fire department, so it's important to carefully consider your needs and requirements before making a purchase. By considering factors such as your jurisdiction size, types of fires, chassis type, water tank capacity, pump type, hose storage, safety features, and maintenance and repair, you can select the right fire engine for your department's needs.
