Floyd Rose Guitar Buying Guide
When it comes to buying a guitar, there are many options available in the market. However, if you are looking for a guitar that allows you to perform dive-bombs, whammy bar tricks, precise tuning and better intonation, then Floyd Rose guitars can be your best bet.
What is a Floyd Rose Guitar?
A Floyd Rose guitar is a type of electric guitar that features a locking tremolo system. Named after its inventor, Floyd Rose, these guitars are designed to stay in tune even with heavy use of the tremolo bar.
Types of Floyd Rose Guitars
There are mainly two types of Floyd Rose guitars, Original Floyd Rose and Licensed Floyd Rose.
Original Floyd Rose
Original Floyd Rose is the genuine tremolo system developed by Floyd Rose and holds a special place in the market. It is made from high-quality materials and is more durable than many other types of tremolo systems. Moreover, it offers amazing sustain and intonation making it a great option for professional players. These tremolo systems are found in high-end guitars built by brands like Jackson, Charvel, and ESP.
Licensed Floyd Rose
The Licensed Floyd Rose is a more affordable option for guitar players who are on a budget. These tremolo systems are made under strict guidelines and quality control by a company named Ping. However, some experts say that they don’t offer the same level of stability and tuning capabilities that the Original Floyd Rose offers. Licensed Floyd Rose is found in guitars made by companies like Ibanez, Schecter, and LTD.
What to Look for when Buying a Floyd Rose Guitar
Tremolo system
The tremolo system is the defining feature of the Floyd Rose guitar. Therefore, it is important to consider the type of tremolo system in the guitar while making a purchase. If you are a professional guitar player, we would recommend choosing a guitar with the Original Floyd Rose since it offers more stability and tuning capabilities.
Neck
The neck is an important factor to consider while buying a guitar as it affects the tone, intonation, and overall playability of the guitar. Always look for a guitar with a stable neck that is not prone to warping or twisting. Moreover, the neck should be comfortable to play and should give a good feel while holding the guitar.
Pickups
The pickups in a guitar play a crucial role in determining the overall sound of the guitar. Hence, it is important to look for pickups that suit your playing style and the kind of music you play. Most Floyd Rose guitars come with humbuckers (two-coil pickups) that offer higher output and a warmer tone, suitable for rock and metal music. However, if you play lighter genres like pop or blues, single-coil pickups are a better choice as they offer a brighter tone and better mid-range.
Body
The body of the guitar is another important factor to consider while buying a Floyd Rose guitar. If you prefer a heavier tone, choose a guitar with a solid body made from mahogany or ash. If you want a lighter tone, go for a guitar with a semi-hollow or hollow body made from maple or basswood.
Budget
Budget is a key factor while buying a guitar. Floyd Rose guitars, especially those with Original Floyd Rose, can be expensive. However, there are affordable options available in the market, like the Licensed Floyd Rose, that can still give you a great playing experience without breaking the bank.
Popular Floyd Rose Guitar Brands
Some of the popular brands that offer Floyd Rose guitars are:
- Jackson
- Charvel
- ESP
- Ibanez
- Schecter
- LTD
Conclusion
Floyd Rose guitars are a great investment for any guitar player looking for a stable and reliable tremolo system that offers great tuning capabilities, amazing sustain and intonation. However, it is important to consider factors like budget, tremolo system, pickups, neck, and body while buying a Floyd Rose guitar. If you are a professional player, we would recommend going for a guitar with the Original Floyd Rose. However, if you are on a budget, the licensed Floyd Rose is a great alternative. Look for the brands mentioned above and choose the guitar that suits your playing style, genre, and budget.
