Introduction
The Flying V is an iconic electric guitar that was introduced by Gibson in 1958. Its unique design features a V-shaped body, angled headstock, and dual humbucking pickups. Over the years, the Flying V has been used by guitar legends such as Jimi Hendrix, Dave Mustaine, and James Hetfield.
Today, there are numerous manufacturers and models of Flying V guitars available, each with their own unique features and characteristics. In this buying guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know to make an informed decision when purchasing a Flying V guitar.
Body Shape and Design
The most obvious characteristic of the Flying V is its V-shaped body. This design is not only unique but also has a functional purpose, as the shape allows for more sustain and resonance. When choosing a Flying V, consider the size and weight of the guitar, as well as the shape of the V itself. Some models may have a more rounded or angular V shape, which can affect comfort and playability.
Another factor to consider is the type of wood used in the body construction. Mahogany and alder are two popular choices that offer a balanced tone and sustain. Maple is also commonly used, providing a brighter tone and more pronounced attack.
Pickups
The Flying V typically features two humbucking pickups, which offer a full and rich tone with less unwanted noise and feedback. Some models may also have a single-coil pickup in the middle position. When choosing a Flying V, consider the output and tonal characteristics of the pickups, as well as the pickup configuration.
Some common pickup options include:
- 490R/498T: Gibson’s flagship humbucking pickups, known for their high output and dynamic range.
- Dirty Fingers: A high-output pickup with a biting, aggressive tone.
- Seymour Duncan JB/59: A versatile set of pickups that can handle everything from clean tones to heavy distortion.
Neck and Fretboard
The neck and fretboard of a Flying V can greatly affect the guitar’s playability and overall feel. When choosing a Flying V, consider the neck profile, scale length, and fretboard material.
Some common neck profiles include:
- Thin: A slim, fast neck profile that is ideal for lead playing and shredding.
- Medium: A balanced neck profile that is comfortable for most players and styles.
- Thick: A chunky neck profile that is ideal for players who prefer more neck support and a fuller tone.
The scale length of a guitar refers to the distance between the bridge and the nut. A shorter scale length can make it easier to play chords and bend strings, while a longer scale length can offer more sustain and a tighter feel.
When it comes to fretboard material, rosewood and ebony are two common choices that offer a warm, rich tone and a smooth playing surface. Some models may also use maple or other exotic woods for the fretboard.
Hardware
The hardware on a Flying V can greatly affect its playability, tuning stability, and overall sound. When choosing a Flying V, consider the type and quality of the hardware, as well as the overall aesthetics.
Some common hardware options include:
- Tuners: High-quality tuners can greatly improve tuning stability and make it easier to make quick adjustments on stage.
- Bridges: The bridge on a Flying V can greatly affect its sustain and intonation. Some models may feature a Tune-O-Matic bridge, which allows for individual string height and intonation adjustment.
- Knobs and Switches: The volume and tone knobs and pickup selector switch can greatly affect the guitar’s sound and feel. Consider the placement, size, and overall functionality of these components.
Price and Value
As with any guitar, the price of a Flying V can vary greatly depending on the manufacturer, model, and features. When choosing a Flying V, consider your budget and the overall value of the guitar.
Some factors that can affect the value of a Flying V include:
- The manufacturer and model
- The type of wood and hardware used
- The overall build quality and attention to detail
- The level of customization and personalization
- The rarity and collectability of the guitar
Price: $1,500 - $5,000+
Conclusion
The Flying V is a unique and highly recognizable guitar that can offer a wide range of tones and playing styles. When choosing a Flying V, consider the body shape and design, pickups, neck and fretboard, hardware, and overall value. By carefully considering these factors, you can find the perfect Flying V guitar for your needs and preferences.
