Left Handed Acoustic Guitar Buying Guide
Being left-handed is not a problem when it comes to playing guitar. However, it is important to choose a left-handed guitar that would make playing music easier and more enjoyable. Left-handed acoustic guitars are more readily available today than they were decades ago, but finding the right one may still be a challenge.
Considerations When Buying a Left-Handed Acoustic Guitar
When you're shopping for a left-handed acoustic guitar, you need to pay attention to a few crucial details. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced player, there are some things that you need to keep in mind before making your purchase:
1. Basic features of the guitar
The basic features of the guitar are important when selecting any guitar, left-handed or not. The neck, body, and headstock are the three main parts that make up a guitar. The neck should be comfortable to hold, the body should fit your playing style, and the headstock should have a tuning system that works well for you.
2. Type of guitar
Acoustic guitars come in a variety of shapes and sizes, each with their own unique sound. It is important to research which type of guitar will best fit your playing style and genre of music. Whether you prefer dreadnought, grand auditorium, or concert guitars, make sure you select a left-handed model.
3. Materials
The materials that make up a guitar have a significant impact on the sound quality, durability, and aesthetics. Common materials used for guitar bodies include spruce, cedar, and mahogany, while rosewood, ebony, or maple are commonly used for fingerboards. Make sure to consider which materials will suit your needs and budget.
4. Brand reputation
The reputation of the brand is also a crucial factor you need to consider before making your purchase. A popular brand does not necessarily mean it is the best for you. Research different brands, read reviews, and seek recommendations from guitar experts before deciding which brand to go for.
Benefits of owning a left-handed guitar
Playing a left-handed guitar has many benefits that make owning one worthwhile:
1. More comfortable playing
Playing a left-handed guitar is more comfortable for left-handed individuals since the instrument can be held more naturally. The strings and frets are arranged in such a way that the player can perform more easily without having to struggle with orientation.
2. More natural feel
Since left-handed individuals have a different brain orientation, playing a left-handed guitar feels more natural. The position of the chords and the way the guitar is held feel more intuitive for a lefty player. This can make learning and playing music much more enjoyable.
3. Better hand coordination
Playing a left-handed guitar can also improve hand coordination for both hands. The right hand is responsible for strumming or picking, while the left hand is responsible for forming chords. Each hand has a different role, and playing a left-handed guitar can help develop coordination and dexterity in both hands.
4. Greater creativity
Playing a left-handed guitar can also promote greater creativity. Left-handed players approach music from a different perspective, which can lead to unique sounds and unconventional techniques.
Conclusion
Buying a guitar, especially a left-handed one, is an investment. It's important to pay attention to the details and take your time when making your purchase decision. By considering the basic features of the guitar, the type of guitar, the materials used, and the brand reputation, you'll be able to choose a guitar that suits your needs and preferences. Remember that playing a left-handed guitar can lead to more comfortable playing, greater hand coordination, a more natural feel, and greater creativity. So go ahead and get yourself that left-handed acoustic guitar that you've always wanted!
Additional Tips for Buying a Left-Handed Acoustic Guitar
Now that you have an idea of the basic things to consider when buying a left-handed acoustic guitar, here are some additional tips to help you find the right instrument that will perfectly fit your needs:
1. Playability
One of the most important factors to consider when buying a guitar is playability - this refers to the guitar's ability to be played smoothly and comfortably.
Playability is subjective, so it's important to try out different guitars and see how they feel in your hands. Look for a guitar that has a comfortable neck and a good setup - this means it shouldn't have any issues with fret buzz or intonation. Playability can directly impact how much you enjoy playing, so definitely take this into account before making a purchase.
2. Budget
The price range for a left-handed acoustic guitar can vary greatly, depending on the quality of the guitar and the brand. Doing your research beforehand can help you arrive at a budget that you're comfortable with.
It's always a good idea to spend a bit more on a high-quality guitar, as this can save you money in the long run. Low-priced guitars often have issues with durability, playability and sound quality. However, you don't need to spend a fortune on a guitar either - there are many mid-priced guitars that offer a good balance of quality and affordability.
3. Sound Quality
One of the main reasons people learn to play guitar is to create music, so sound quality is an important factor to consider when buying a left-handed acoustic guitar. The guitar's sound quality is affected by the materials used, the quality of construction, and the design of the guitar.
When choosing a guitar, try to listen to the sound it produces. Play the guitar and see if it produces the tone and sound that you're looking for. Make sure the sound is balanced and clear, and that the volume and sustain are consistent throughout the guitar.
4. Comfort
Comfort is another critical factor to consider when choosing a guitar. Your left-handed guitar should be comfortable whilst being played from a seated or standing position, making it easy to manoeuvre and play. Be sure to try out guitars in a seated and standing position to ensure maximum comfortability.
The size and weight of the guitar is also important. A large bodied guitar may be uncomfortable for smaller individuals, and a heavier guitar may be a burden for extended playing. A guitar that is too large or too heavy may affect your playing and lead to discomfort after prolonged use.
5. Brand Reputation
When buying a guitar of any kind, it is important to consider the reputation of the brand. A well-known brand usually means good quality guitars, and is also likely to offer more after-sales support. A guitar from a reputable brand may be more expensive, but may be worth the investment in the long run.
Some of the top brands to consider when considering a left-handed acoustic guitar include Martin, Taylor, Gibson, Fender, and Yamaha - all of these brands have dedicated left-handed models that are tailored to fit the needs of left-handed players.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, buying a left-handed acoustic guitar requires a few considerations, the most important of which are the basic features of the guitar, type of guitar, material, brand reputation and cost. Playing a left-handed acoustic guitar has several benefits such as more comfortable playing, greater creativity, better hand coordination and a more natural feel.
Using these tips, you should be able to choose a high-quality left-handed acoustic guitar that will enhance your music-playing experiences. Remember to take your time, try out different guitars before making a purchase, and ensure that the guitar you choose checks all the right boxes for you. Good luck and happy shopping.
