In this buying guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know to make an informed decision about purchasing a metal detector.Types of Metal Detectors
The first thing to consider when purchasing a metal detector is the type you want. There are three primary types to choose from:1. VLF Metal Detectors
VLF, or Very Low Frequency detectors, are the most common type on the market. They work by sending a current through the coil in the search head, which creates a magnetic field. When the field interacts with metal objects, it produces a signal that is detected by the detector. Pros:- Great for detecting smaller objects like coins and jewelry
- Can discriminate between different types of metal
- Good at identifying the depth of the object
- Less effective in highly mineralized soil
- Can be affected by electromagnetic interference from power lines or other sources
2. PI Metal Detectors
PI, or Pulse Induction, detectors work by sending short pulses of current through the coil. When the current is turned off, a magnetic field collapses around the coil, producing a signal. The detector then measures the time it takes for the signal to disappear, which can give an indication of the size and depth of the object. Pros:- Effective in highly mineralized soil
- Better at detecting larger objects at greater depths
- Less affected by electromagnetic interference
- Cannot discriminate between different types of metal
- Less effective at detecting smaller objects like coins and jewelry
3. Multi-Frequency Metal Detectors
Multi-Frequency detectors, also known as Broad Band Spectrum detectors, are capable of detecting multiple frequencies simultaneously. This allows them to be more effective in a wider range of soil types and conditions. Pros:- Can be effective in a wider range of soil types and conditions
- Good at detecting both small and large objects
- Can discriminate between different types of metal
- Can be expensive
