Podcast Mic Buying Guide
Podcasting has become increasingly popular over the years. With a podcast, you can share your voice, opinions, and knowledge with people worldwide. However, the microphone you choose is crucial in achieving high-quality sound for your podcast. The wrong microphone can lead to poor audio quality, which could result in your listeners losing interest. In this article, we’ll guide you through everything you need to know when choosing the perfect podcast mic.
Types of Podcast Microphones
Before purchasing a mic, it’s essential to know the different types of microphones and their features. Below are the three types of microphones commonly used in podcasting:
Dynamic Microphones
Dynamic microphones are popular among podcasters because they are very durable and can capture sound at close range without picking up background noise. Additionally, dynamic mics don’t require phantom power, which means they don’t require an additional power supply to operate. Dynamic mics are the most affordable type of microphone, making them a good choice for beginners or podcasters who are just starting out.
Condenser Microphones
Condenser microphones are more sensitive and produce a clearer sound compared to dynamic mics. They are suitable for podcasters who want to capture more details in their recordings. Condenser mics require phantom power to operate, which means they need an external power supply or a mixer with phantom power to function. They are also more expensive compared to dynamic mics.
Ribbon Microphones
Ribbon microphones are the least common type of microphone and are widely used for music production. They are very delicate and sensitive, and they require phantom power. Ribbon mics produce a warm, natural sound that is suitable for podcasters who want to create a vintage sound.
Features to Consider When Choosing a Podcast Mic
Directionality
The directionality of a microphone refers to how it picks up sound from its surroundings. There are three types of directionality to consider:
Omni-Directional Microphones
An omni-directional microphone captures sound from all directions, making it a perfect choice for podcasters who want to capture sounds from their surroundings. However, this type of microphone can pick up background noise, making it unsuitable for environments with high levels of ambient noise.
Uni-Directional Microphones
A uni-directional microphone captures sound from one direction, making it a popular choice among podcasters. The uni-directional mic is further divided into two categories; the Cardioid and Super-cardioid mics.
The Cardioid Microphone – This microphone picks up sound from the front, making it a right choice if you want to capture your voice or your guest’s voice without picking up as much background noise.
The Super-cardioid Microphone – This microphone is more directional than the cardioid mic, making it ideal for podcasters who want to eliminate background noise entirely. The only downside is that it picks up less sound from the sides.
USB vs. XLR
Another essential feature to consider when choosing a podcast mic is whether it has a USB or XLR connection.
USB Microphone – As the name suggests, USB microphones connect directly to your computer via USB. They are the easiest to set up and don’t require any additional equipment, making them an ideal choice for beginners. However, USB mics often have a lower recording quality compared to XLR mics, and they can’t be used with mixers or other audio equipment.
XLR Microphone – Unlike USB mics, XLR mics require an external audio interface or mixer to operate. They offer superior sound quality compared to USB mics, and they allow you to use various processing tools to enhance your recordings, such as EQ, compression, and reverb.
Price
Price is a significant factor when choosing a podcast mic. Microphones can range from as low as $20 to as high as $2000. It’s essential to set a budget before buying a microphone and consider how professional your podcast will be. For beginners, an affordable microphone is an excellent choice. As your podcast grows, you can invest in a better mic that will improve your sound quality.
