Reverb Pedal Buying Guide
Reverb is an essential effect for any guitarist or musician. It adds depth, space, and dimension to sound recordings and performances. While some amplifiers come with built-in reverb, many do not, or the built-in reverb is not customizable enough. This is where reverb pedals come in. There are many reverb pedals available in the market, and choosing the right one can be daunting. This guide will help you make an informed decision when buying a reverb pedal.
Types of Reverb Pedals
There are different types of reverb pedals available in the market, and each has its own unique sound and features. Below are the different types of reverb pedals:
Spring Reverb Pedals
Spring reverb pedals emulate the sound of a spring reverb tank, which is found in vintage amplifiers. They are known for their characteristic "boingy" sound, which is great for blues, rock, and surf music. Spring reverb pedals are simple and easy to use, and they offer a natural and warm reverb sound.
Hall Reverb Pedals
Hall reverb pedals simulate the sound of a concert hall or large room. They are known for their long decay times and ambient sound, which is great for creating atmospheric and spacious soundscapes. Hall reverb pedals are versatile and can be used for different genres of music, including ambient, post-rock, and shoegaze.
Plate Reverb Pedals
Plate reverb pedals replicate the sound of a metal plate, which was used in vintage recording studios. They are known for their bright and expansive sound, which is great for adding depth and shimmer to guitar sounds. Plate reverb pedals can be used in different genres of music, including country, pop, and indie rock.
Modulated Reverb Pedals
Modulated reverb pedals add modulation to the reverb signal, creating a wobbling or swirling effect. They are great for creating dreamy and ethereal soundscapes. Modulated reverb pedals are versatile and can be used in different genres of music, including psychedelic, post-rock, and experimental.
Reverse Reverb Pedals
Reverse reverb pedals reverse the reverb signal, creating a haunting and otherworldly effect. They are great for creating dramatic soundscapes and can be used in genres such as ambient, post-rock, and experimental.
Features to Consider When Buying a Reverb Pedal
When buying a reverb pedal, here are some features to consider:
Reverb Types
The type of reverb you want will depend on the genre of music you play and the sound you are trying to achieve. Choose a reverb pedal that has the type of reverb you want.
Controls
Reverb pedals come with different controls that allow you to adjust the reverb sound. Some common controls include:
- Level: Controls the amount of reverb that is blended with the dry signal
- Decay: Controls the length of the reverb tail
- Time/Size: Controls the length of the reverb decay or the size of the simulated space
- Tone: Controls the EQ of the reverb sound
- Pre-delay: Controls the time between the dry signal and the beginning of the reverb decay
Choose a reverb pedal that has the controls you need to achieve the sound you want.
True Bypass
A true bypass switch ensures that the reverb pedal does not affect the guitar's signal when it is turned off. This is important because some reverb pedals can add noise or alter the guitar's tone, even when they are not being used. A true bypass switch ensures that your guitar's tone remains pure and unaffected, even when the reverb pedal is not being used.
Stereo Output
If you plan to use the reverb pedal in stereo, choose a reverb pedal with stereo output. This will allow you to send the reverb signal to two different amps or speakers, creating a wider and more spacious sound.
