Set Top Box Buying Guide
A set-top box is a small device that is connected to a television set to enhance the viewing experience of television programs. It is also known as a set-top unit or STU. It is an affordable and convenient way to access a variety of multimedia content without changing the televisions or monitors. By using a set-top box, you can watch your favorite movies, TV shows, and sports on-demand. However, before purchasing a set-top box, you need to consider the following factors:
1. Compatibility
The first and foremost essential factor to consider before purchasing a set-top box is compatibility. Check if the set-top box you are going to purchase is compatible with your television set. Most set-top boxes use HDMI ports to connect your TV, while some older models might use AV cables. Make sure you have the right cables to connect your set-top box to your TV. Check for the resolution of your TV as well. If your TV doesn't support 4K, it doesn't make sense to purchase a set-top box that supports 4K resolution. Similarly, if your TV supports 1080p resolution, a set-top box that supports 4K resolution is unnecessary.
2. Channels
The number of channels a set-top box provides is another essential factor to consider. Most set-top boxes come with a plethora of channels, ranging from movies to sports, and kids' channels to news channels. Some set-top boxes provide access to premium channels like HBO, Showtime, or Starz for an additional fee. Before purchasing a set-top box, make sure it provides access to the channels you want to watch. Check the channel package carefully and see if the channels you want are included. If you are a sports enthusiast, make sure the set-top box you purchase has a good collection of sports channels.
3. Streaming Services
A set-top box is not just about watching TV channels; it is also an excellent way to stream movies and TV shows. Most set-top boxes come with pre-installed apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu, etc. that allow you to stream movies and TV shows on-demand. Check if the set-top box you are going to purchase provides access to the streaming services you use. If you are a Netflix subscriber, check if the set-top box provides access to Netflix. Similarly, if you are an Amazon Prime Video subscriber, make sure the set-top box provides access to Amazon Prime Video.
4. Recording
If you don't want to miss your favorite TV shows, a set-top box that supports recording is essential. Some set-top boxes come with a built-in hard drive that allows you to record TV programs automatically. This way, you can watch your favorite TV shows at your convenience. Check if the set-top box you are going to purchase supports recording. Also, check the storage capacity of the hard drive. If you are someone who likes to record a lot of TV programs, you might need a set-top box with a large storage capacity.
5. User Interface
The user interface of a set-top box is an essential factor to consider. A good user interface makes navigating through channels, streaming services, and apps more comfortable. Check if the set-top box you are going to purchase has a user-friendly interface. Make sure the interface is easy to navigate and that you can find the channels or content you want to watch quickly. Some set-top boxes come with a voice-enabled remote control that allows you to search for channels or movies using voice commands. If you are someone who prefers voice commands, check if the set-top box you are going to purchase supports voice-enabled remote control.
6. Price
Price is also an essential factor to consider before purchasing a set-top box. Set-top boxes come at different price points, with the price ranging from $50 to $200. The price depends on several factors, including the number of channels, streaming services, and recording capabilities. Determine your budget and look for a set-top box that meets your requirements within your budget. Don't overspend on features you don't need.
7. Brand
Brand is another factor to consider before purchasing a set-top box. Some brands have a solid reputation in the market, while others are relatively new. Consider purchasing a set-top box from a brand that has a good reputation for providing quality products and excellent after-sales support. A well-known brand is likely to offer better customer support and warranty periods than a new and untested brand.
Conclusion
A set-top box is an excellent way to enhance your TV viewing experience. It provides access to a wide range of TV channels, streaming services, and recording capabilities. However, before purchasing a set-top box, consider factors like compatibility, channels, streaming services, recording, user interface, price, and brand. By doing so, you can purchase a set-top box that meets your requirements and enhances your TV viewing experience.
