Truck Rack Buying Guide
Truck racks are an essential accessory for any truck owner who frequently hauls cargo. Whether you’re a contractor, a farmer, or an avid adventurer, a truck rack can help you transport bulky items that won’t fit inside your truck bed. However, with so many truck racks on the market, it can be challenging to decide which one is right for you.
In this buying guide, we’ll discuss the essential factors you should consider when purchasing a truck rack. From weight capacity to installation, we’ll cover everything you need to know to ensure you make an informed purchase.
Weight Capacity
The weight capacity of a truck rack is perhaps the most crucial factor to consider. Every truck rack has a maximum weight capacity, which refers to the amount of weight it can safely support. It’s essential to determine how much weight you’ll be hauling before purchasing a truck rack to ensure you select one that can handle your cargo.
Most truck racks have weight capacities that range from 400 to 1500 pounds. If you’re only transporting light items like kayaks or bicycles, a rack with a 400-pound capacity may be sufficient. However, if you’re hauling heavier items like lumber or construction materials, you’ll need a rack with a higher weight capacity.
Rack Material
The material of the truck rack is another crucial factor to consider when making a purchase. Most truck racks are constructed using aluminum, steel, or a combination of both.
Aluminum racks are lightweight and durable, making them a popular choice for many truck owners. Aluminum racks are also resistant to rust and corrosion, which can be a significant benefit if you frequently transport items in wet or humid conditions.
Steel racks are heavier than aluminum racks but are generally more robust and durable. If you’ll be hauling very heavy items, such as construction materials, a steel rack may be a better option than an aluminum rack.
Some truck racks are constructed using both aluminum and steel, combining the benefits of both materials. These racks are typically more expensive than racks made of a single material but can offer a good balance of weight and strength.
Rack Type
There are several different types of truck racks available on the market. The type of rack you choose will depend on the type of cargo you’ll be hauling and how frequently you’ll be using the rack.
Cargo Bars/Load Stops
Cargo bars, also known as load stops, are the most basic type of truck rack. Cargo bars typically consist of two adjustable bars that are placed across the bed of the truck. The bars can be adjusted to accommodate different types of cargo, such as lumber or piping.
Cargo bars are affordable and easy to install, making them a popular choice for occasional use. However, they may not be sufficient for very heavy or large items, as they don’t offer the same level of support as other types of truck racks.
Ladder Racks
Ladder racks are designed to transport long items such as ladders, pipes, or lumber. Ladder racks typically feature two bars that run perpendicular to the bed of the truck and are mounted to the truck’s cab.
Ladder racks can be an excellent choice for contractors or construction workers who frequently transport long items. However, they may not be as versatile as some other types of racks and may not be suitable for transporting smaller items.
Kayak Racks
Kayak racks are designed specifically for transporting kayaks, canoes, or other small watercraft. Kayak racks typically feature two bars that run parallel to the bed of the truck and are mounted to the truck’s bed.
Kayak racks are an excellent choice for outdoor enthusiasts or anyone who frequently transports watercraft. However, they may not be suitable for transporting other types of cargo.
Cab Racks
Cab racks are designed to be installed on the truck’s cab, usually above the rear window. Cab racks can be used to transport ladders, pipes, or other long items that won’t fit in the bed of the truck.
Cab racks can be a good choice for contractors or construction workers who need to transport long items but may not be suitable for transporting smaller items or other types of cargo.
Basket Racks
Basket racks, also known as cargo racks, are designed to transport a variety of different items. Basket racks typically feature a large flat surface with sides and can be installed on the bed of the truck or on the truck’s cab.
Basket racks are a versatile option that can be used to transport a wide range of items, from small boxes to large bags of mulch. However, they may not be suitable for very heavy items, as they typically have lower weight capacities than other types of racks.
Installation
The installation of a truck rack is another important factor to consider. Some truck racks require professional installation, while others can be installed by the truck owner.
If you’re not comfortable installing a truck rack yourself, it’s essential to choose a rack that requires professional installation. Some racks may also require modifications to your truck, such as drilling holes in the bed or cab.
If you plan to install the rack yourself, make sure you carefully read the installation instructions before making a purchase to ensure you’re comfortable with the process.
Extra Features
Some truck racks come with extra features that can be beneficial, depending on your needs. Here are a few features to consider:
Adjustable Height
Some truck racks allow you to adjust the height of the rack, which can be beneficial if you frequently transport items of different sizes.
Tie-Down Straps
Some truck racks come with tie-down straps, which can be used to secure your cargo and prevent it from moving during transport.
Lockable
Some truck racks are lockable, which can help prevent theft of your cargo or the rack itself.
Folding
Some truck racks can be folded down when not in use, which can be beneficial if you need to use your truck for other purposes.
Conclusion
Overall, the most important things to consider when purchasing a truck rack are the weight capacity, material, and type of rack. It’s also essential to consider the installation process and any extra features you may need. By taking these factors into account, you can ensure you select a truck rack that meets your needs and helps you transport your cargo safely and efficiently.
