Tummy Time Buying Guide
As a parent or caregiver of a young baby, you’ve likely heard about the importance of “tummy time” for your little one’s development. Tummy time is a necessary part of baby’s playtime routine and can have long-lasting benefits. In this guide, we’ll go over the essentials of what tummy time is, why it’s important, and how to choose the right products to make it as enjoyable and comfortable for your baby as possible.
What is Tummy Time?
Tummy time is the practice of placing your baby on their stomach while they are awake and playing. This puts them in a position to strengthen their head, neck, and upper body muscles while engaging in sensory experiences like reaching for toys and exploring their surroundings. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, tummy time should be practiced for at least 2-3 times a day starting from a few minutes and gradually increasing. It’s important to note that tummy time isn’t meant to be a source of stress or frustration for your baby. It should always be supervised, and it’s okay to gradually increase the time as your baby becomes more comfortable in this position.
Why is Tummy Time Important?
Tummy time is important for your baby’s physical and cognitive development. It helps to strengthen the muscles needed for crawling, sitting, standing, and walking. It also provides an opportunity for your baby to develop hand-eye coordination by reaching for and manipulating toys, as well as explore their surroundings in a way they can’t do when lying on their back. Additionally, tummy time helps prevent a flat spot from forming on the back of your baby’s head, as well as promotes healthy vision development. It may also help prevent developmental delays and may assist in reducing the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
Choosing the Right Tummy Time Products
Now that you understand the importance of tummy time, it’s important to choose the right products to make it as comfortable and enjoyable for your baby as possible. Below are some important features to consider:
Mat Material
A tummy time mat is a must-have for creating a safe and comfortable space for your baby. Look for a mat made from thick, cushioned material that will protect your baby’s delicate skin from hard surfaces. Additionally, make sure the mat is easy to clean and free of dangerous chemicals.
Mat Size and Shape
The size and shape of your mat are also important factors to consider. Look for a mat that’s large enough to give your baby enough space to move around and explore but small enough to fit in your home without taking up too much space. Rectangular or circular mats are best as they provide ample space for your baby to move around and play.
Movable Toys
A big part of tummy time is providing your baby with stimulating toys to play with. Look for a mat that comes with movable toys that can be placed within reach of your baby once they are placed on their tummy. This will help keep them engaged and promote sensory and motor development.
Ergonomic Shape
Some tummy time mats come with an ergonomic shape to help support your baby’s body and promote proper spinal alignment. This can be especially important for babies with reflux or neck issues, as it can help ease discomfort during tummy time.
