Ice Fishing Buying Guide
Ice fishing is one of the most exciting winter activities that one could engage in. What’s more, ice fishing is an activity that doesn’t require much to get started. For a start, you’d need some warm clothing, a good pair of boots, and an auger to drill through the ice. However, if you want to have the best experience possible when ice fishing, there are several tools that you’d have to buy. In this buying guide, we’ll highlight some of the equipment that you’d have to get before you hit the ice for the first time.
Ice Fishing Rods and Reels
An ice fishing rod is considered by many as the most important and versatile tool in the ice fishing arsenal. It is the tool that you’d use to detect bites and set the hook. Typically, ice fishing rods are a lot shorter than a regular fishing rod typically measuring between 24-36 inches.
Two types of ice fishing rods exist – spinning or inline. Spinning ice fishing rods, are designed with a spinning reel and guides on the rod’s underside. In contrast, inline ice fishing rods, have a straight-line reel mounted atop the rod and guides along the rod’s length.
Ice fishing reels are typically small and comprise fewer components than regular reels. They are designed to catch smaller fish species like perch, bluegill, and crappie. More importantly, ice fishing reels are built to withstand harsh winter conditions offering smooth dragging, less line twisting, and minimal ice build-up.
Ice Fishing Lines
Ice fishing lines come in different colors, strengths, and thicknesses. The fishing line will be determined by what you plan to catch, the clarity of the water, and the weather conditions. For instance, if you’re targeting panfish like perch or bluegill, you’d want to use a lighter line. In contrast, if you’re fishing for walleye or trout, you’d want to use a stronger line between 4-8 pounds.
Ice fishing lines also come in two types – monofilament and braided. While monofilament lines stretch and provide some shock absorption, braided lines have zero stretch, making them a perfect choice if you’d like to transmit every bump of the fish to your rod-tip.
Ice Fishing Lures
The lure you use will depend on your target species, season, weather conditions, and the depth you’re fishing. Here are some of the most popular types of ice fishing lures:
Spoons
Spoons mimic small fish swimming and are the most popular choice for catching walleye and pike. They come in different sizes and colors, and we recommend carrying a few in your tackle box to see what fish prefer that day.
Jigs
Jigs are the most versatile type of lures and are effective on most fish species. They comprise a lead head with a hook and can be attached to a variety of plastic grub, bait, or live worm. They come in different shapes, sizes, and colors, and you can alternate the plastic bait to suit the fish's preference.
Soft Plastics
Soft plastic baits, worms, and grubs work well for catching panfish like crappie, bluegill, and perch. They work best when tipped on a lead jig head or fished on a tiny hook below a bobber.
Ice Fishing Augers
An auger is a drilling tool that you’ll use to create holes in the ice for fishing. You can drill the holes using a variety of tools, including hand auger or power auger. Hand augers are ideal for small holes and are quieter than power augers. However, power augers come in a variety of sizes and drill through the ice faster than hand augers. If you fish often, you should consider investing in a power auger.
Ice Fishing Shelters
If you’re going to ice fish for more than a few hours, you’d want to invest in an ice fishing shelter. Ice fishing shelters come in two types – portable and permanent. Portable shelters are lightweight, easy to set up, and take down. They work best if you go ice fishing occasionally or if you fish in different locations. Permanent shelters are typically constructed of wood or metal and mostly positioned on the lake's shore.
The most significant advantage of permanent structures is that they offer a lot of storage space, are comfortable, and warm. However, they are more expensive, and you also don't have the flexibility of moving them around the lake.
Ice Fishing Accessories
Even though ice fishing accessories aren't essential, they can make your experience more comfortable and enjoyable. Here are some of the items you might consider buying to enhance your ice fishing experience:
Ice Fishing Heater
An ice fishing heater is a must-have if you plan to fish for several hours on end. Heaters come in various types – propane, kerosene or electric – and ranges from small units to powerful heaters that can warm up a fishing shelter in minutes.
Ice Fishing GPS
An ice fishing GPS is an excellent tool for tracking your fishing locations, setting waypoints, or finding a new spot. Some GPS come preloaded with maps of popular fishing locations, while others allow you to create your own custom maps.
Ice Fishing Flasher or Fishfinder
An ice fishing flasher or fishfinder is an advanced device that can help you locate fish more easily. These devices are designed to show you what's happening beneath the ice, and whether fish are present and their depth. They are especially helpful when ice fishing in deeper water where it might be more challenging to locate fish.
Final thoughts
Ice fishing is a fantastic winter sport that you can enjoy either alone or with friends and family. With the right equipment, you can have a fun-filled day and catch your fair share of fish. Investing in good ice fishing gear is essential if you want to have a thrilling experience.
