Sega Genesis Buying Guide
The Sega Genesis, released in 1988, was one of the most popular video game consoles of its time. It was known for its library of classic games like Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star, and Streets of Rage. Even today, the Sega Genesis still has a loyal fan base and is a beloved piece of gaming history.
If you're interested in purchasing a Sega Genesis, there are a few things you should consider before making your purchase. In this buying guide, we'll cover everything you need to know to find the best Sega Genesis for you.
Original Sega Genesis vs. Sega Genesis Mini
Before we dive into the details of the original Sega Genesis, it's important to consider the Sega Genesis Mini. Released in 2019, the Sega Genesis Mini is a smaller, more modernized version of the original console. It comes pre-loaded with 42 classic games and has modern features like an HDMI output and USB power supply.
While the Sega Genesis Mini is a great option for those who want a more modern version of the console, many enthusiasts prefer the original console for its nostalgic value and the ability to use original cartridges.
Compatibility
When looking for a Sega Genesis, it's important to consider compatibility. The Sega Genesis was released in several different models over the years, each with its own set of features and compatibility options.
Sega Genesis Model 1
The original Sega Genesis, also known as the Model 1, was released in 1988. It features a sleek, black design and is compatible with all original Genesis cartridges. One thing to note is that the Model 1 has a "High Definition Graphics" port that allows for stereo sound and better picture quality, but not all games are compatible with this port.
Sega Genesis Model 2
The Sega Genesis Model 2, released in 1993, is a smaller and slightly redesigned version of the original console. It features a rounder design and is often called the "Mega Drive 2" in other parts of the world.
The Model 2 is compatible with most original Genesis cartridges, but it does not have the "High Definition Graphics" port found on the Model 1. Instead, it only has a standard A/V output for sound and video.
Sega Genesis Model 3
The Sega Genesis Model 3, released in 1998, was the last model of the Sega Genesis to be released. It is the smallest and most compact version of the console, but it also has the fewest compatibility options. The Model 3 is not compatible with all original Genesis cartridges and only has a basic A/V output.
Condition and Price
Another important factor to consider when buying a Sega Genesis is the condition and price of the console. While it's possible to find original Sega Genesis consoles on eBay or other online marketplaces, it's important to be cautious and to take into account the condition of the console before making any purchases.
It's best to look for consoles that are in good working condition and have been tested by the seller. It's also important to consider the price of the console and whether or not it's a fair deal. While some sellers may try to sell a console for an exorbitant price, others may be willing to sell their consoles for significantly less.
Controllers
The Sega Genesis was known for its iconic three-button controller, which was used for most games on the console. When looking for a Sega Genesis, it's important to consider the condition and number of controllers that come with the console.
It's also worth noting that some games on the Sega Genesis, like fighting games or sports games, may require a six-button controller. While these controllers are less common, they can still be found online or in retro gaming stores.
Games
Of course, one of the biggest draws of the Sega Genesis is its library of classic games. When considering a Sega Genesis purchase, it's important to take into account the availability and cost of games for the console.
The good news is that many classic Genesis games have been re-released on newer consoles or through digital marketplaces like Steam or the Nintendo eShop. However, if you're interested in playing original Genesis cartridges, it's important to consider the cost and availability of these games as well.
Conclusion
The Sega Genesis is a beloved console with a rich history in the world of video games. While there are several different models and compatibility options to consider when purchasing a Sega Genesis, it's ultimately up to the individual to decide which console is right for them.
By taking into account factors like compatibility, condition and price, controllers, and games, you can find the best Sega Genesis for your retro gaming needs.
