Small Guitar Buying Guide
Introduction
If you are interested in playing the guitar, there are several factors to consider before you buy one. A guitar is a long-term investment that you can enjoy for many years, so it's important to choose the right one. Whether you are just starting or you are an experienced player, there are a few things you should keep in mind when buying a small guitar to ensure you get the best value for your money.
Type of Guitar
One of the biggest factors to consider when buying a guitar is the type of guitar you want. There are three main types of guitars: acoustic, electric, and classical. Each has its own unique sound and style, so it's important to choose one that suits your preferences.
- Acoustic guitar: Acoustic guitars produce sound through the vibration of the strings, tonewoods, and the body of the guitar without the use of amplifiers. These types of guitars are perfect for beginners, as they are relatively inexpensive and easy to play. They are also great for playing a wide range of music styles like pop, blues, country, and rock.
- Electric guitar: Electric guitars use an amplifier to produce their sound. They are perfect for playing rock and heavy metal, as they can produce a high level of distortion. They require a bit more investment in terms of equipment, but they can produce a unique sound that you can't get from an acoustic guitar.
- Classical guitar: Classical guitars have a different shape and style from acoustic and electric guitars, producing a warm and mellow sound than the other two. These types of guitars are perfect for playing classical music, as well as jazz and flamenco. They also have wider fretboards, which make them great for fingerpicking and playing complex chords.
Size of Guitar
The size of the guitar also plays a big role in deciding which one to buy. While there are standard sizes for guitars, there are also smaller sizes that may be more suited for people with smaller hands or for children. Size also affects the tone of the guitar.
| Guitar size | Age range | Height range |
|---|---|---|
| 1/4 size | 4-6 years | 3'3" - 3'9" |
| 1/2 size | 6-9 years | 3'10" - 4'5" |
| 3/4 size | 9-12 years | 4'6" - 4'11" |
| Full size | 12 and up | 5' and up |
Budget
Your budget is also a factor in deciding which guitar to buy. Guitars range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. Quality guitars made of premium materials and with premium craftsmanship can be expensive. However, there are also excellent quality guitars available at lower prices.
Brand and Quality
Brand and quality play an important role in the selection of a guitar as they determine the overall quality, tone, and playability of the guitar. Brands that have a long-standing and excellent reputation for making quality instruments are likely to give you a better experience. When selecting a guitar, it is advisable to purchase from reputable brands such as Gibson, Martin, Taylor, Yamaha, Fender, Ibanez, and PRS. The build quality and materials used in making the guitar should also be considered, including the type of wood, the frets, and the tuners.
Conclusion
In conclusion, buying a small guitar is an investment that requires consideration of several variables to ensure that you have the best experience possible. The considerations we have listed here include the type of guitar, size of the guitar, budget, the brand, and the quality of the build. If you consider these variables carefully, you will be able to find a guitar that suits your needs and budget, and provides you with endless hours of musical pleasure.
