Tree Pruners Buying Guide
Tree pruning is an essential task that helps to maintain the health and beauty of the trees in our gardens. Whether you have a small yard with a few trees or a large property with extensive landscaping, buying the right tree pruner is crucial for successful pruning. With a vast array of options available from different manufacturers, choosing a tree pruner can be overwhelming. However, this guide will provide you with valuable information to help you make an informed decision when buying a tree pruner.
Types of Tree Pruners
There are three primary types of tree pruners to choose from, including bypass pruners, anvil pruners, and lopping shears. Each type serves a different purpose, and understanding how they work is vital for making the right choice.
Bypass Pruners
Bypass pruners are the most commonly used type of tree pruner. They feature a sharp blade that scissor-like passes over a curved jaw, consequently slicing and trimming the stem. Bypass pruners are ideal for cutting green wood, as the clean cut minimizes damage to the tree branch, making it easier for the plant to heal. These pruners are perfect for delicate pruning tasks, making them ideal for shrubs and rose bushes, as well as fruit trees that have small diameters.
Anvil Pruners
Anvil pruners function similarly to bypass pruners, but utilize a straight blade surface that comes down on a flat surface. The stem is cut where it meets the flat surface, unlike bypass pruners, which slice through the center of the stem. Anvil pruners are ideal for thick woody branches and conventional trimming tasks. However, they can cause blockage in the stem, reducing the tree's ability to heal properly. These pruners are ideal for cutting back old wood or removing dead branches.
Lopping Shears
Lopping shears are a specialized type of pruner used for cutting thicker branches. They have long handles that provide more leverage and capability to prune thicker branches compared to bypass or anvil pruners. Lopping shears have a minimum cutting capacity of 1 1/2 inches, making them ideal for trees with larger branches. They offer a quicker and safer solution than using a handsaw for larger pruning tasks.
Important Features to Consider When Buying Tree Pruners
When buying a tree pruner, there are several features you need to consider to make sure that you get the most suitable pruner for your needs. These features are:
Cutting Capacity
The cutting capacity of a tree pruner determines the thickness of the branches it can cut through. It's essential to select a pruner based on the size of the branch you will be pruning. For smaller branches, bypass pruners will suffice. However, for larger branches, you'll need a lopping shear or a pruning saw that can cut through thicker branches efficiently.
Tension Adjustment
The tension adjustment of a tree pruner is critical for adjusting pressure on the blade for smoother pruning. Improper tensioning can hinder the blade's performance, causing unnecessary strain during pruning tasks. Look for pruners with adjustable tension that allows for smoother and more efficient pruning.
Length of Handles
The length of the handles determines the amount of leverage and cutting power of the pruner. Longer handles provide more leverage, making it easier to prune thicker branches. However, shorter handles are better suited for delicate pruning tasks. It's essential to go for a pruner with handle lengths that match your pruning needs.
Blade Material
The blade material of a tree pruner determines its durability and cutting ability. High-carbon steel is the most popular option as it's durable, hardwearing, and can hold an edge well. Additionally, blades coated with Teflon or rust-resistant material are ideal for gardeners working in wet weather environments.
Blade Design
The blade design is another crucial aspect of tree pruners. It determines the type of pruning tasks that they can accomplish. Bypass pruners feature a scissor-like blade that's ideal for clean and precise cuts on green wood. Anvil and ratchet pruners have straight blades that are better suited for cutting dry or dead wood.
Weight
The weight of the pruner can affect the user's comfort and ability to handle the pruning task effectively. A lightweight pruner is ideal for delicate pruning tasks, while a heavier one is better suited for thicker branches. However, it's essential to find a balance between weight and cutting power to ensure that pruning tasks are completed efficiently and effectively.
Brand
The brand of the tree pruner you choose is essential for guaranteeing quality, durability, and reliability. Choose from reputable brands that have a proven track record of quality products and excellent customer service. Some trusted brands include Fiskars, Corona, and Felco.
Tips for Using a Tree Pruner
Using a tree pruner can be dangerous, especially for inexperienced gardeners. Therefore, it's crucial to adhere to safety guidelines to prevent accidents and injuries. When using a pruner, make sure to:
- Keep the blade sharp to ensure clean cuts
- Wear protective clothing, including goggles, gloves, and long sleeves
- Ensure that the branch you are pruning isn't touching any electrical wires or wet surfaces to avoid electrocution
- Align the blade with the wood and make a clean cut to promote healing in the tree
- Prune branches at a slight angle, away from the tree trunk
Conclusion
Tree pruning is an essential task for maintaining the health and beauty of trees. Choosing the right tree pruner is crucial for getting the job done efficiently and effectively. When buying a tree pruner, consider the cutting capacity, tension adjustment, length of handles, blade material, blade design, weight, and brand, and always adhere to safety guidelines when using your pruner.
