Vegan Candy Buying Guide
Introduction
If you're a vegan, or even if you're not but you want to make a conscious choice about what you eat, you might be wondering whether or not you can enjoy candy. The good news is that there are many options out there for those who follow a plant-based diet. Vegan candy is made without any animal-derived products, such as milk, gelatin or honey. But how to choose the right one for you? In this guide, we'll give you some tips on what to look for when buying vegan candy.
Ingredients to Avoid
The first thing you should do when looking for vegan candy is to check the ingredients list. Not all candy is made equal, and some might contain animal-derived ingredients that are not immediately obvious. Here are some ingredients to watch out for:
- Gelatin: This ingredient is made from the collagen present in animal bones and skin, and it's often used to give candy a chewy texture. Look for candies that use alternatives such as carrageenan, agar-agar or pectin, which are plant-based options.
- Milk powder or whey: These are common ingredients in chocolate and other types of candy. Look for vegan alternatives that use plant-based milk, such as almond or rice milk, or that don't use milk at all.
- Honey: This sweetener is often used in hard candies or lollipops. Look for candies that use agave nectar, maple syrup or other plant-based sweeteners instead.
- Cochineal dye: Also known as carmine, this red pigment is extracted from crushed cochineal insects, and it's often used to color candy. Look for candies that use plant-based alternatives, such as beet juice or spirulina.
Certifications to Look For
Another way to ensure that the candy you're buying is vegan is to look for certifications. These are labels that are given to products that meet certain standards, and they can be a useful tool when shopping for vegan candy. Here are some certifications to look for:
- Vegan Society: This is a UK-based organization that certifies products that don't contain animal ingredients or have been tested on animals. Look for the word "vegan" or the Vegan Society logo on the packaging.
- The Vegan Action/Vegan Awareness Foundation: These are two US-based organizations that certify vegan products. Look for the Certified Vegan logo on the packaging.
- USDA Organic: This certification indicates that the product has been made using organic ingredients and that it doesn't contain any genetically modified organisms (GMOs). While this certification doesn't necessarily mean that the product is vegan, it can be a good indication that the candy doesn't contain any animal-derived ingredients.
Popular Vegan Candies Brands
If you're new to the world of vegan candy, it might be overwhelming to choose from the many brands available. Here are some popular vegan candy brands that are worth trying:
- Gummy Bears: Look for brands such as Surf Sweets, Smart Sweets or YumEarth, which offer vegan gummy bears made with plant-based ingredients and natural flavors.
- Chocolate: Look for brands such as Enjoy Life Foods, Theo Chocolate or Alter Eco, which offer vegan chocolate bars made with plant-based milk or no milk at all.
- Hard Candy: Look for brands such as GoNaturally or Torie & Howard, which offer vegan hard candy made with plant-based sweeteners.
Conclusion
Vegan candy doesn't have to be bland or boring, and there are many options out there for those who follow a plant-based diet. By checking the ingredients list, looking for certifications and trying different brands, you can find delicious vegan candy that satisfies your sweet tooth without compromising your ethical beliefs.
