He Man Toys Buying Guide
If you're a fan of the Masters of the Universe franchise, there's no doubt that you're familiar with He Man, the most powerful man in the universe. He Man has been a pop culture icon for over three decades, and the demand for He Man toys and collectibles has never waned. Whether you're a long-time collector or a newbie looking to start a collection, this He Man toys buying guide will help you make informed decisions when purchasing He Man toys.
1. Know Your Collectibles
When it comes to collecting He Man toys, there are various types of collectibles, ranging from vintage to modern toys. He Man toys have been on the market since the 1980s, and the older the toy, the rarer and more valuable it is. The following are some of the different types of He Man toys and collectibles you need to know:
Vintage Figures
These are the original He Man toys produced by Mattel in the 1980s. These figures, with their distinctive muscular physiques, are highly sought-after by collectors. The most notable figures include He-Man, Skeletor, Beast Man, Stratos, and Man-At-Arms.
Masters of the Universe Classics Figures
These are updated versions of the original He Man figures produced by Mattel. Unlike the vintage figures, these have more articulation points and greater detail. Additionally, they come with updated accessories and packaging. Some of the figures in the Classics line include He-Man, She-Ra, and Skeletor.
Statues and Busts
For collectors who prefer larger and more detailed pieces, statues and busts are a great option. These collectibles stand around 12 inches high and are made from high-quality materials. Some of the notable He Man statues and busts include Skeletor on Panther statue and He Man bust by Pop Culture Shock.
ReAction Figures
These are modern figures inspired by the vintage He Man toys. They are smaller than the originals, standing at 3.75 inches tall. The ReAction figures have simpler articulation and simpler paint finishes, and they are reasonably priced for collectors on a budget.
2. Consider Condition and Packaging
When buying He Man toys and collectibles, it is essential to consider the condition and packaging. The condition of the item significantly impacts its value to collectors, and the original packaging is equally important. Here are some tips when considering the condition and packaging of your collection:
Avoid Damaged Packaging
The packaging of original vintage and Classics figures can be the most valuable part of the collectible. Collectors prefer packaging in as near-mint condition as possible. Avoid purchasing items with bent or creased packaging or having faded coloration as these decrease their value greatly.
Check for Wear and Tear
Delicate appendages such as weapons, capes or accessories are points of high wear, even for new toys. Check that there are no visible signs of wear or damage, which are factors that can decrease the value of the collectible.
Look for Grading
Collectors often submit their collectibles for grading by reputable third-party organizations like Action Figure Authority or Certified Guaranty Company. The grading provides insight on the condition of the item and its value.
3. Research the Market Value
Before making your purchase, it’s essential to have an understanding of the market value of He Man toys and collectibles. Take time to research the prices of He Man figures and gain knowledge on what to expect to pay for various items. There are various resources to help you in this process, including price guides and online marketplaces such as eBay and Amazon.
Online Marketplaces
Online marketplaces like eBay and Amazon are great sources for assessing market value. Check for items that have sold and current listings to determine the value of your intended purchase. Additionally, the ratings and reviews on these platforms provide insight on the seller's credibility.
Price Guides
Price guides for action figures are an excellent resource. They provide comprehensive guides and indications of what to expect when dealing with vintage or modern He Man figures. Some of the notable price guides include The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide and the Toy Collector's Price Guide.
4. Choose a Reputable Seller
When purchasing He Man toys and collectibles, it is important to choose a reputable seller. Not all sellers have the best intentions when selling their items, and it’s essential to look out for red flags when deciding who to purchase from. Consider the following when choosing who to buy from:
Positive Ratings and Reviews
When buying online, consider the seller's ratings and reviews. Ensure that the profile has high positive ratings with many customer reviews. A good seller will have a history of selling authentic items, on-time delivery, and responsive customer support.
Condition and Authenticity Guarantee
Reputable sellers guarantee the authenticity of their merchandise and the condition of the items they sell. These sellers usually offer money-back guarantees if there is evidence of authenticity, which gives you peace of mind that you get what you pay for.
Reliability of Shipping and Delivery
When buying online, it’s essential to consider the reliability of shipping and delivery. Ensure that the seller ships their items on time and provides tracking numbers for the packages. Be sure to check with customer service before placing the order.
5. Consider the Display Ability of Your Collection
The presentation of your collection can be as important as the items themselves. Whether you collect for personal enjoyment or exhibition purposes, it is essential to consider how each piece will display. Here are some display considerations:
Display Cabinets and Cases
When collecting He-Man figures, the importance of the display cannot be overstated. Collectors of vintage figures, especially, tend to preserve their items in secured collectors' cases, to minimize the handling and movement of their figures.
Lighting
Different figures can respond uniquely to natural or artificial lighting when properly placed. It is essential to consider the right brightness, angle, and warmth of a lighting source when it comes to proper display of He Man figures.
Positioning
After carefully securing your pieces in their display cabinet, placing in the correct position can make your collection look more impressive. You may want to position your larger or more valuable pieces in the center or at eye level, while smaller pieces can adorn the cases sides.
6. Final Thoughts
The Masters of the Universe franchise and the popularity of He Man toys and collectibles are unlikely to diminish anytime soon. Whether you're a long-time collector or a first-time buyer, this He Man toys buying guide should help you make informed decisions when buying your next He Man toy. Remember, the condition, packaging, and authenticity of the toy is crucial to your collection's value. Look for reputable sellers and patient when looking for specific pieces. Take pride in your collection and find suitable and impressive display options to showcase your lineup.
